HOW BABIES ARE MADE [BOOK]

Reader reviews

I had this book as a kid in the early 70s, and I loved it. I bought it for my six year old daughter, and it seemed to be a good fit for her. The authors give enough information without being preachy or technical, without stating values other than creating a human baby is a special relationship. I really dig this book, and would recommend it to other open-minded parents.

SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES [BOOK]

Editorial Reviews

Each year more than 12 million people in the United States contract a sexually transmitted disease (STD), even though AIDS has increased awareness of safer sex practices. The fact that many infected individuals are asymptomatic allows inadvertent transmission of those diseases. Marr, a physician specializing in the treatment of STDs, has written an excellent book that offers practical information on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of these infections. She begins with basic anatomy, symptoms, and the components of a medical examination for men and women. She then offers important advice about communications with sex partners and safe sex. The second part of her book discusses specific diseases and their symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment. Although The Sexually Transmitted Diseases Sourcebook (Omnigraphics, 1997) offers more detail on individual diseases, it is much more expensive and lacks this book's vital information about communication. Marr's coverage of both gays and straights and use of case histories to teach make this an outstanding addition to all consumer health collections. Highly recommended.?Barbara M. CONDOM SENSE [BOOK]

Editorial Reviews

Many people believe that AIDS has moved from being the "gay men’s disease" it was thought to be during the 1980s and early 1990s to being a disease that affects mainly people in the developing world. While the numbers of deaths in the developing world do indeed dwarf those in the industrialized world—who can now extend their lives for many decades through anti-retroviral drugs—two important facts still remain: There is no cure for AIDS, and unprotected sex can kill. The public health messages of the 1990s have been forgotten as a new generation of young men and women throughout North America and Europe are returning to sex without condoms, resulting in an increase in HIV numbers after several years of decline. Even senior citizens are contracting the disease they thought was the province of other age groups and other cultures.

Dr. Monica Sweeney is on the front line of the fight against AIDS, both as a member of the President’s Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS and as a doctor working in the heart of the inner city at the Bedford-Stuyvesant Family Health Center in Brooklyn, New York. Every day, she sees the toll that HIV and AIDS take on families and neighborhoods. Direct and uncompromising, Condom Sense focuses on the reality of human lives and choices. Boldly and honestly, it tells it how it is—what condoms are, who makes them, where to get them, and how to use them. A passionate, practical, detailed guide to living a healthy, safe sexual life in the twenty-first century, Condom Sense will not only make you a condom expert but could even save your life.

TEENS, SEX, AND STIs [DVD]

Editorial Reviews

Too often, teens believe that they are immune to the consequences of risky behavior. This video provides a dose of realism. The issue of teenage sexual activity is addressed in a straightforward fashion. Teens will learn about several unsavory infections that can be acquired by those who engage in sex without using adequate protection.

MEN, WOMEN AND RELATIONSHIPS [BOOK]

Editorial Reviews

Men and women are alien species, writes relationship guru Gray in this 1993 forerunner to his bestselling Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus series, now in paperback. Women are emotional, subjective, relationship-oriented and like to talk about feelings, while men are rational, objective, work-oriented and like to withdraw into their "cave" and watch TV. The mutual incomprehension of the sexes leads to friction and conflicted relationships in which women feel neglected and unloved and men feel nagged and smothered. Rather than denying or suppressing their differences, Gray argues, men and women must acknowledge their masculine and feminine essences and learn to understand, tolerate and value the characteristics of the opposite sex. Men must learn to listen sympathetically ("make reassuring responses like 'hmm,' 'uh-huh,' or 'tell me more,'") while women must learn to give men space. Gray often pushes the essentialism too far ("Illness and disease are manifestations of the dark side of our female self") and treads lightly around issues of sexism. But many readers will see elements of truth in these behavioral stereotypes, and Gray has a perfect pitch for the ways in which misunderstandings can escalate into shouting matches and deep-seated marital bitterness. His is a hopeful message that troubled relationships stem from a simple failure to communicate, but it skirts the possibility that there might be deeper sources of conflict between men and women.

FEMALE MASTURBATION [DVD]

Editorial Reviews

The Clitoris has the highest concentration of nerve endings in the body." As this opening graphic fades, a woman from the Welcomed Consensus enters the bedroom and soon will take you with her to share her intimate experience of masturbation. She gradually will build and extend her orgasm making it possible for the viewer to feel it too. This DVD is highly informational for both men and women as it shows a simple, uncut film of a woman from a low state of arousal to a heightened, extended orgasm with many close-up shots of her genitalia. Filmed in one take, it accurately represents continuous female orgasm. The viewer can witness all of the signs of orgasm in her body, as well as the details of her technique that anyone can use to better their sex lives with their partner. A remarkable film taking female masturbation to a new level of enjoyment.

TICKLE YOUR FANCY [BOOK]

Reader Reviews

Pocket guide for kitty is the best way I can describe this book. It's geared to women as you can expect but I believe that this guide on female masturbation can help men as well. Sadie Allison does a wonderful job of demystifying this pleasurable act. The book is written from the perspective that a lesser percentage of women indulge in masturbation than men and I tend to agree based on societies expectations and restraints on women as a whole. That aside I thought Sadie Allison tackled the subject with great enthusiasm. Each chapter is relatively small but packed with useful information. Of course she begins with a small chapter highlighting the fabulous benefits of masturbation such as increased self-esteem, physiological benefits, and the safety of masturbation along with other equally important benefits. There are 13 chapters in the book that cover the expected chapters on anatomy, orgasm, and fantasy but my favorite chapters concentrated on clitoral stimulation, dildos, vibrators, and water fun. She even has a chapter on g-spot stimulation. I especially found the dildo size chart very useful. This is a handy book to get if you're new to masturbation but know this book concentrates on the female and self-pleasure. If you're looking for a book that expands on sexuality with a partner you will want to explore other books on sexuality.
